Interim Chairperson, Dr. Keely Statuer-Halsted, will be giving a talk entitled “Moral Panic and Prostitution in the 19th Century Polish Lands” at 204 International Center from 1:30 – 3:00 on October 9th.
The talk is part of the Center for Gender in Global Context’s Colloquia Series: New Research on Women and Gender, Global and Local Perspectives.
The late 19th century saw a rise in anxiety among Polish elites about the institution of police-regulated prostitution. Concern about streetwalkers soiling urban public spaces, about the disappearance of young women into sex trafficking rings, and about the invasion of degenerative sexual diseases into the bourgeois home prompted a sustained hysteria about the role of immoral “fallen women” in the Polish nation. This presentation examines the sources of this moral panic and assesses its significance for understanding shifting gender and class relations in pre-WWI Poland.
